[ET116] Nikos Theologitis / Stamatis Theologitis / Giannis Theologitis / Antoni Robert – Amorgos Soundscape

ET116 FREE Download here.

The notion of folk culture has definitely been transformed through the course of the centuries. More particularly, tradition and its authenticity and spontaneity in the context of orality seem somehow to have been mutilated and reconstructed, as soon as globalization and multiculturalism became one of the dominant discourses during the 21st century. Folk songs haven’t been an exclusion in this particular case, as revivalism and folklorism have emerged as a devastating force in the production of folk music. In “Amorgos Soundscape” by Antoni Robert, a paradox occurs: One could say that these folk songs are seen through the eyes of a foreign visitor and the recording could be seen as an exotic sound diary of a trip on a Greek Island. On the other hand, Antoni Robert’s recordings of the Theologitis’ family of musicians reveal an impressive approach on the concept of orality and its proud survival in the Greek folk culture.

Antoni Robert talks about Amorgos Soundscape:

“This is my fourth soundscape, but it is of a totally different nature with respect to the previous ones. Initially, I just wanted to proceed in a similar way that I did for the St Petersburg one, but once on the island, I realized that this idea was not adequate. St Petersbourg is a noisy place, while Amorgos it is not. Generally speaking, the island soundtrack is the wind and the sea. And at once the title “Wind on Water” came to my mind, but unfortunately, that title was already used by Fripp & Eno. But it was adequate indeed. I had the chance to listen to some goats also; the island is the hometown for a huge quantity of goats. So I was wondering about those simple things when it happened. It was dinner time, and we went to the small town of Tholaria looking for a taverna, and we found the Panorama Tavern. We started dining and at a given moment the musicians appeared and started to play great music from the islands. I recorded two complete sets, in two unforgettable nights. More than four hours of live performance.

And I was said they do it every night. Once at home, while listening to that music I understood that it would have been inadequate to edit bits of it in order to build something more personal. The main feeling was a deep respect for the work of those musicians, and so the best thing to do was to choose two or three songs and use them as they were performed, in spite of the recording problems and the noise of the taverna clients.

The only things I’ve added are the intro and the links between songs because wind and sea had to be there anyway. The results are a real soundscape of a dinner at Panorama Tavern, with the music played by three real artists. Stamatis Theologitis plays the violin and sings, Giannis Theologitis plays Laouto and sings, and the great Nikos Theologitis, 90 years old at the moment of the recording, and the owner of the tavern sings, claps hands, dances and explains jokes whenever he wants. I don’t know if I will reach that age. Probably not. But if I ever I’m 90 years old I want to be like Nikos. A happy man full of energy and passion. So this soundscape is a respectful tribute to The Theologitis Trio. It is their record. The rock band is The Cave Children, from Athens, included because our stay there coincided with a 4 days rock festival, and it was a part of the soundtrack too.”

[ET114] Pineal Neuron Trauma – The Story Of…

Pineal Neuron Trauma – The Story Of…

FREE Download here

This is the first and maybe the last Pineal Neuron Trauma release. The project is inactive for a long time and its future is uncertain. So this would be the right time to have a release with all the recorded stuff till now.

The story began when Tim Van der Schraelen (Antwerp, Belgium) and Mattia P. (Italy) started Pineal Neuron Trauma and recorded their first 3 tracks (tracks 01-03) in November 2013 and a fourth one (track 04 : Digital Skullfuck) in April 2014. Both they had their own solo music projects. Mattia liked to make mostly noise music as “Human Virus Transmission” while Tim liked to make experimental/dark ambient music using mostly soundscapes and rhythm beats, and also making videos for his and other’s people music using various aliases such as Obu Tarn, (Alex) Amerantropoid(es), etc. Tim has a hearing problem and he uses hearing aid in order to make music.

In April 2014 Tim also asked Theofil Tsiolakakis (Thessaloniki, Greece) who he already had his own project “Mean Flow” (experimental, ambient, noise, etc) using mostly keyboards to collaborate and they recorded a S/T song (track 23) as “Drowned In The Sewers” almost simultaneously with PNT 4th track. They started to make some more few music (which finally aborted by Tim and used by Theofil to Mean Flow music) while Tim asked Theofil to join PNT. So as a trio project this time. PNT recorded 13 tracks (tracks 05-17) in almost 1 year period, between May 2014 to April 2015. Then there were some disagreements with Mattia, and Tim decided to stop the collaboration and PNT were inactive again for some months.

In September 2015, Tim asked Theofil to continue PNT and write new tracks and also brought another member to project, Joseph (Athens, Greece) who has his solo music project too, called “BroodingSideOfMadness“. Joseph also has his own music label called “Etched Traumas“.. So with this line-up they recorded 2 tracks in September 2015 (tracks 18 : I Walk The Same Dark Place) & 19 : Brave New World) and another one (track 20 : Fake Spirituality Is Moral Rape) in February 2016. Joseph then, for some personal reasons stopped recording with PNT although he was never officially left the project.

Tim and Theofil recorded a track (track 24 : Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad) in March 2016 and Tim decided to have it as the second track by Drowned In The Sewers. After that, there was another period not so active. Tim And Theofil started another 2 tracks in June 2016. The one track (track 21 : “He Who Talks To Machines”) got the final recording and the video clip in August 2016. The second track (The Pineal Neuron Trauma Continues) named as this, because of Tim’s will to continue PNT, left without a video clip.

This last track (The Pineal Neuron Trauma Continues) and another track named “Chaos” that recorded in October 2016, mixed together by Tim as one final track (track 22 : The Burning Past) and a new final video clip was made by Tim in March 2017.

Last time Tim’s hearing ability got worse and this is another main reason PNT’s future is so uncertain.

[ET104] BroodingSideOfMadness & nobodisoundz – Dis-Tu

Dis-TuEight lo-fi sketches that lead to unchartered territories while we breath few words of Mallarmé.

BroodingSideOfMadness is interested in phonemes, graph theory, realism and any dystopian ambience. He prefers the use of acoustic material than synthetic and he always seeks for the generative element in his tracks. He runs Etched Traumas net label.

Nobodisoundz comes from France and first started this sound-making project by cobbling together music samples, sounds, field recordings and the results of his fiddling with audio software. These sounds completed his works and added an atmosphere within and around his paintings, subsequent installations and videos. He looks for dense, heavy, noisy, squeaky, tense and quiet atmospheres, which have to be both dark and bright at the same time.

[ET83.2] Unsample – Ipsissima Voce

Ipsissima Voce

A listener from an outer reality approaches the modern metropolis and perceives a version of the contemporary urban sound. Noises, words, roars, whispers and melodies merge together to construct the semi-logical language of a bio-mechanical, hyper-organism. This language is the mental space in which new narrations may emerge and old cultural symbols can lead to new unpredictable meanings. Further on, in this urban, ”post-modern” space the listener may listen to a strange ”song”. The inner voice of the city.

The dual role of voice as both a sonorous ”object” and a facilitator of meaning, narration and verbal communication is crucial for our understanding of sound and music. Ipsissima voce plays with the exchange of roles between voice, music and narration. While the electronic and pre-recorded sounds overwhelm the narrative and musical part, the voice is reduced to either short musical signals or distant reminiscence of ancient languages and generic vocal gestures so that the end result becomes a kind of abstract, electronic ”opera”.

My Problem Child [Italy]

Giacomo Salis started as a drummer for Chemical Marriage, Lady Radiator, Dancefloor Stompers and his new electronic solo project stemmed from his passion for cut-up and the exploration of noise music. The project regards the relationship between music and image, and tries to create sound spaces with the aim of reaching and interacting with other forms of expression, for instance: video art, installation and theater, using a sound formula that shifts from dark ambient and noise, to experimental electro-acoustics.

Starting with an intense use of the loop technique, he develops the ‘idea of a “horizontal” persistent kind of music, enriched by cinema references and nocturnal atmospheres. Using these prerequisites My problem child realized the soundtrack for the photographic exhibition: “Interni di Donna” by the artist Tomaso Spiga using  electronics and percussions which was performed at the San Giovanni Battista church in San Sperate. Salis has just released a collection of pieces on you tube entitled “Orphan Songs” and is working on an album that was inspired by Afro-American Voodoo religion. He also collaborated in Mauro Sambo’s project: 6’27”.

These sounds completed my works and added an atmosphere within and around my paintings, subsequent installations and videos. With time, these sounds have gained a more and more important place and have become self-sufficient, no longer requiring any other medium. I look for dense, heavy, noisy, squeaky, tense and quiet atmospheres, which have to be both dark and bright at the same time.

Sonologyst [Italy]

Sound is in our minds before birth. Afterwords we just make it free.

Sonologyst was born in Naples (Italy), in May the 8th, 1971. After studying mathematics and physics at Naples University, he graduated as a sound technician in 1999. In 2000 he started experimenting with electronic mediums, and the result was a 4 track album released as ‘Memorie Elettroniche Sonore’ (on PeopleSound, a record label sponsored by TDK). After that he studied guitar and improving his technical skills in the electronic music field, returning to produce music, finalizing many ideas he had in previous years.

In end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 Petroglyph Music netlabel released, under the name Sonologyst, “Ipotesi del continuo”, “Beyond the logic of Science” and “Forgotten Rituals”, the latter a collaboration with polish musician Dariusz Michalak. In 2013 Sirona Records released “The waiting”, an album of solo electric guitar experiments, and Sillage Intemporell publishes a dark industrial album of Sonologyst in collaboration with french experimental musician Adrien Mailler a.k.a. No Way Out .

In 2014 Petroglyph Music released Unexplained Sounds album, a work focused on the “uncommon” field recording manipulations, and Geometrical Phenomenons in collaboration again with NOW, where there’s an exploration of generative music solutions.

Various visual works have been based on Sonologyst’s tracks by visual artists like Cesar Naves, Alex Amerantropoides, Swoon, and many single compositions were selected for compilations around the world (Midnight Radio, IFAR, Red Venice, Petroglyph Music, Sombre Soniks dark ambient volumes, etc) or for radio streaming shows and underground events.

Sonologyst bases this project on the perpetual experiment in sound, looking back to early experimentation of the Fifties and Sixties of Berio, Stockhausen, Ferrari, Parmegiani, Subotnik explorations, forwarding to the future possibilities of electronic and electro-acoustic instruments, with a special attention to the relationships between music and science, between music and other art forms, including experimental cinema and ancient mythologies. Many of Sonologyst compositions have mathematical concepts, that serves as inspiration. Although this relationship, the structures are not rigid – all pieces are almost completely improvised. That’s why he calls his music “experimental”, meaning that the result is unpredictable. Sonologyst research continues with experimental guitar manipulations and into more remote soundscapes, and sonic abstractions territories.

Etched Traumas Vol. II 2011-2013 [ET25-ET50] Compilation

Etched Traumas Vol. II 2011-2013 [ET25-ET50]

It has been a fantastic three-year journey, with amazing works by amazing artists from all over the world. We are honoured to have released music by some of the most fantastic, innovative and creative artists of today. We thank all of them for showing patience and trust.

In a true collaborative spirit, we worked towards all of these non-profit releases, whilst aiming for the innovative and anti-retro elements of modern sound/audio/music.

Imaginative and highly creative, the artists on Etched Traumas have explored and experimented with synthesized and acoustic audio. They have dived deep into uncharted sonic realms, using experimental sounds from space or even sounds based on tiny little creatures, such as ants.

Introverted and extroverted music, power electronics, noise or breakbeat. Delicate frequencies, or majestic esoteric experimentation.

It is true.

We feel like explorers; we travel light years in distance via unheard sounds springing from our lungs. Armed with a DAW, and a poor quality audio recorder, for new situations. There are rules to override, and wires to stretch. Capture the sound of stretching a copper string, an accidental breaking of glass and suddenly we are between mellowness and harshness, sadness and happiness. We are here to make a joyful noise, because all impulses escape prototyping.

‘Our model is sound’, so lets go down and burn up the road. Leave your etched traumas behind.

Last but not least, we’d like to thank all of our downloaders over the last three years.

[ET49] Tar Miles – ‘Tar Labs pt.1’

Tar Labs pt.1

Etched Traumas is more than happy to release Tar Miles’ work titled ‘Tar Labs pt.1′. Tar Miles is the ghost of Thanos Papadopoulos, Hana, who creates electronic music in experimental mode through techno forms. Between Transmat and Metroplex seminal sonic footprint, Tar Miles infuses the latter with an experimental twist. Structural and textural elements are clearly identifiable, phat synths, 808-like percussion, modulation, low pitched vocal samples, while they manifest the starting point for Tar Miles’ exploration on composition and rhythmic adventure. Tar Miles has numerous releases under Hana moniker on digital and physical format. Enjoy ET49!

[ET22] Darkstar83 – Beyond The Old Cold Metal

Etched Traumas is more than happy to release Darkstar83’s ‘Beyond The Old Cold Metal’ dark ambient work. Well hidden in an old factory among relics of rusted machinery, Darkstar83 introduce us to his dark ambient world with fantastic soundscapes full of ominous and grim feelings. In ‘Beyond The Old Cold Metal’ he fuses the genre he loves with organic cosmic textures and elements. Sparkles, machinery sounds, burnt wood, leakage sounds, distant horns; everything’s here to create a meditative work.

[ET18] Unciviliz – Draft Et Draft

Etched Traumas is more than happy to release ‘Draft et Draft’, the first release of Greek artist Unciviliz. Unciviliz experiments with noisy sonic blasts and  soundbites, low frequencies and vocal samples creating miniaturesque noise works.  ‘Draft et Draft’ is radical, unorthodox but you can discover a humorous side either in its track titles or in its compositions. Make no mistake. This is pure rock’n’roll in its very essence. Fun, guts, heart and mind. You won’t find any high-brow theory here. A sound collage of an evening street fight or an obscure Snowhite tale reading, Unciviliz mutates them into noise stabs.
